Invirase (Saquinavir), used in combination with ritonavir and other HIV medications, is used to help control HIV infection. It helps to decrease the amount of HIV in your body so your immune system can work better. This lowers your chance of getting HIV complications (such as new infections, cancer) and improves your quality of life.

Mechanism of action:


Invirase (Saquinavir) inhibits the HIV viral proteinase enzyme which prevents cleavage of the gag-pol polyprotein, resulting in noninfectious, immature viral particles.


Dosage and Administration:


Use Invirase (Saquinavir) as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take Invirase (Saquinavir) and ritonavir within 2 hours after a full meal.

  • Ritonavir should be taken at the same time as Invirase (Saquinavir).

  • Taking Invirase (Saquinavir) at the same times each day will help you to remember to take it.

  • Take Invirase (Saquinavir) on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it.

  • Talk with your doctor before you eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while you use Invirase (Saquinavir).

  • Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Invirase (Rilpivirine).

Store:


Store Invirase (Saquinavir) at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a tightly closed bottle. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Invirase (Saquinavir) out of the reach of children and away from pets.


Side effects:


Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or tiredness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
